As LED lighting has taken over nearly every moment of our daily lives and many cities around the world have completely replaced their street lights with LEDs, the time of smart zebras has come as well.
Imagine a zebra crossing whose surface is lined by LEDs that light up your way when you cross. This light signals both to drivers and to cyclists that there are pedestrians crossing. In this way, even if you are hidden by the trees along the pavement or distracted by your phone, crossing becomes much safer. This is also an option that is significantly more secure for children, who are much more likely to rush out in the street without thinking of their safety.
A prototype of this new technology was presented near Mitcham, South London, after being developed by the technological company Umbrellium in co-operation with Direct Line insurance company, The Sun reported.
Another advantage to the LED zebra is that whenever there are more pedestrians crossing, the width of the lighted walkway increases and lights up the paths of all participants.
This new technology may change zebra crossings, which are 50-60 years old. That way we can add another invention to the list of achievements of the twenty-first century, an invention that can reduce the number of road accidents and make crossing dangerous sectors safer.
All this is a shining example of how new technology improves people’s safety.
