LED lighting is protecting Mona Lisa’s smile

Everybody has heard of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and her mysterious smile. The painting, currently housed in the Louvre, is one of the most famous works of art in the world. But what is the connection between The Gioconda and LED lighting?

It turns out light is the paints’ worst enemy. This is why in 2013 the Louvre renewed Mona Lisa’s lighting. The new LED lights with 34 LEDs improve the painting’s colours. They reduce the canvas’ exposure to infrared and UV rays, halt aging and reduce electric power consumption by 73 %.

Additionally, LED lighting generates a lot less heat than traditional light bulbs, which decreases the strain on AC systems and so reduces the harm done to museum artefacts.

In recent years, light designers control the direction of light and focus only on museum exhibits instead of setting the whole room alight. The works are subject to less expose this way and so they suffer less damage as well. And visitors concentrate on the masterpieces more easily.
